Do you and your dog understand each other? Then nothing interferes with having a romp. Crawl on hands and knees or roll over the floor whilst provoking him a little bit. See how your dog reacts. Guard his body language: is he enjoying horsing around like a couple of oversized puppies, does he frolic? Stop when you're scaring him, or when he gets too excited or aroused.

Hebben jij en je hond een goede band? Dan is ravotten leuk vermaak. Kruip op handen en voeten of rol over de vloer en daag hem een beetje uit. Let op de lichaamstaal van de hond tijdens de stoeierij. Amuseert hij zich? Gaat hij helemaal los? Stop als hij het eng vindt, of als hij overenthousiast raakt of opdringerig wordt.

ROLL OUT - UITROLLEN

roll out - uitrollen

Materials: beach mat, Yoga mat or bath towel. Dog food.

Roll up the mat and place by each turn a piece of dog food. Put the mat on the floor with the last piece of dog food in the fold at the beginning. The dog sticks his nose in it. At the same time you say: 'roll' or 'push' so he can fold out later on anything you ask him to. It's an easy trick because each and every dog searches for more food while unwinding the mat or towel. You just have to relate the command to the action.

Materiaal: strandmatje, yoga mat of badhanddoek. Brokjes.
Vouw de badhanddoek in de lengte dubbel. Begin met oprollen en leg bij elke draai een brokje. Leg de opgerolde badhanddoek neer met aan het begin in de kneep een brokje. De hond pakt het brokje en duwt tegelijkertijd de handdoek een beetje om. Zeg: 'duwen' terwijl je voor de hond, met de handdoek tussen jullie in staat. Deze combinatie van spel en truc is een inkoppertje: de hond wil de brokjes en rolt als het ware zelf de handdoek uit. Door de oefening te herhalen met gebruik van het woord 'duwen' (en het later verminderen van de hoeveelheid brokjes) leert je hond het afrollen zichzelf aan.

SHOW ME THE WAY - VERTEL!

Follow me - volg me

Your dog wants to tell you something (is wrong). He forces you to watch at him by poking you, making a noise, or a stringent look. Take him seriously and give him your full attention. Stand beside him. Say: 'What’s going on? What do you want to show me? where should I look?' Point in front of him. Then go behind him and let him lead the way. Encourage him to show you the way (to the crime scene). Point at things: do you mean this or …?

Keyword is: ‘look’. Rehearse the term when your dog p.e. spontaneously shows you his favourite toy: let me look. Or when he's triggered by a bird in the sky: Look there.  Et cetera.

Very suitable skill when the dog smells danger.

Je hond stoot je aan of wil je met zijn dwingende blik iets duidelijk maken. Hij wil je naar een bepaald iets toe leiden. Neem hem serieus en geef hem je volledige attentie. Ga vlak achter hem staan. Wijs met je hand vooruit, terwijl je vraagt: ‘Wat is er aan de hand? Waar moet ik heen/kijken?’ Spoor hem aan om je naar de crime scene (in Skips geval de crème scene) te brengen. Wijs zaken aan: ‘Bedoel je dit?’

Kernwoord is ‘kijken’. Oefen het woord met bijvoorbeeld een speeltje wat de hond vast heeft en jou spontaan laat zien. Op spannende toon: ‘Laat eens kijken wat je hebt.’ Of je hond spot een eekhoorntje in de boom: 'Kijk!'

Heel toepasbare kennis als de hond onraad ruikt.

PICKPOCKET - ZAKKENROLLER

PICKPOCKET

Does your dog steal behind your back? Learn the thief a legal trick! For this trick your dog knows how to apport (go fetch) and he understands the concept of 'grab', 'hold', and 'bring it to me'. 

Warming up. Put a handkerchief in front of the dog. Ask to give it to you. If he does the job well, put the handkerchief (a piece of the hanky is still visible) in the pocket of a jacket that is hanging on a chair. He does the trick? Make it more difficult by stashing it away so he can't see it. Expand with your handbag if you want. Warning, your dog is now a professinal hardened criminal. Watch out for pickpockets!

ZAKKENROLLER

Maak van je hondendief een legale zakkenroller. Je hond is bekend met apporteren en het begrip ‘vast’. Leg een zakdoek neer en oefen het ‘ophalen en voorbrengen’ zodat de hond zo dadelijk begrijpt wat je van hem gedaan wilt hebben. Stop de zakdoek nu zichtbaar in de jaszak van een jack of colbert dat over een stoel hangt. Vraag hem de zakdoek te halen. Snuffelt hij in de buurt van de jaszak? Zeg dan ‘pak vast’ en ‘kom voor‘. Is dit een koud kunstje voor hem, verberg de zakdoek dan in de jaszak. Bedenk voordat je hem dit trucje aanleert, dat je hond een veelpleger kan worden die zich vrij spel zal veroorloven.

SCHAMEN - SHAME ON YOU

You can teach your dog how to be ashamed of himself just like humans do. Make a pellet of a piece of scotch tape and put it on his snout. The dog wants to rub it of. Simultaneously you say: shame on you. By practicing it more often, the dog will link the word to the gesture.

I find it no fun. It’s not natural for a dog to feel ashamed. Teach your dog instead the word ‘rub’ when he already rubs the goop out of his eyes or sand from his snout that remained there after digging.

I use 'rub' so Skip can show me where it itches, a tick crawls or hides (which is mostly on his head or collar).

Je kunt je hond zich leren ‘schamen’ door een stukje plakband te verfrommelen dat je op zijn snuit plakt. De hond zal het irritante plakkertje er met zijn poot af willen halen. Op dat moment zeg je ‘schaam je’. Door dit meermaals te oefenen zal de hond de vraag combineren met de pootbeweging. Dit soort antropomorfe kunstgrepen gaan mij te ver.

Om je hond het woord ‘wrijven’ te leren, maak je gebruik van het moment waarop hij de slaap uit zijn ogen wrijft of achtergebleven zandkorrels wegveegt (na het graven). 

Ik gebruik het zodat Skip me kan aanwijzen waar hij jeuk heeft (bijvoorbeeld een grasaartje in de vacht), een teek zit of dat hij me kan vertellen in welk oor zand zit.

EASTER EGG - PAASEI

Skip found a hidden Easter egg on the farmyard. Gently as if it was a precious Fabergé jewel, he picked it up with his mouth,. He walked around: what to do with this very strange stone? Is it eatable or is it for fun to play with? He rolled it on the grass. Not very interesting. The farmer pricked the egg with a thumb tack. Skip tasted the egg jelly. Mjammjam. That tastes morish. He cracked the egg and ate it. Eastern will be a piece of cake for Skip!

Skip vond een vers kippenei op het erf: un pièce de resistance. Als een kostbaar Fabergé juweel pakte hij het in de bek en liep er zo een tijdje mee rond. Hij wist niet wat hij ermee aan moest: is het om op te eten of om mee te spelen? Hij liet het op het gras vallen en rolde er wat mee. Mm, interessant, doch vreemd object. Onze gastheer prikte met zijn vinger een bluts in het ei en liet Skip de eigelei proeven. Dat smaakte naar meer. Hij kraakte het ei en likte het uit. Pasen wordt een makkie voor Skip.
